Soave

Endless vineyards and a cellar from the Napoleonic era

In northern Italy, half an hour from Verona at an altitude of only 40 meters from the sea, one of the most famous wines in Europe, the Soave wine, is produced. It is an Italian dry white wine which is a Protected Designation of Origin product. The wine takes its name from the homonymous village of Soave, which dates back to Roman times. Soave with a population of only 7000 thousand is the ideal destination for wine lovers. Arriving in Soave, the first thing one sees is the medieval castle that dominates the top of the hill above the village. The castle dates back to the 15th century as it was built by the Venetians. It is divided into three sections while on the first level one will find the ruins of a 10th century church. Then the visitor faces the village which is located at the foot of the hill. The village today is a mix of old and new as there are old buildings from the Napoleonic era as well as modern ones which blend harmoniously with the environment of the area.

The Vineyards in Soave

Soave is a dry white Italian wine from the Veneto region in northeastern Italy.

The Historical Cellar

Our journey started by road from Venice. Upon arriving in the area we chose to leave our things at our accommodation first and then explore the area. The area has many accommodations, mainly agritourism. The accommodation we chose was in the vineyards. A stone-built building which even had a cellar from the time of Napoleon. The owners even possessed a document certifying the existence of the cellar for the wines of the time. The family that owned the accommodation were also wine producers. We chose to take a tour of the vineyards and learn about how the famous wine is produced. After the tour it was time for the tasting, we tried wines with different maturation times. Then we were taken to the historic cellar where today it functions as a wine shop.

The Venetian Castle

The next day after enjoying the excellent breakfast with handmade tarts and other handmade delicacies we left our accommodation and headed to the Venetian castle. It is one of the best examples of architecture in the Veneto region. Today it hosts events and receptions. The Venetian castle is worth visiting not only for its historicity but also for the amazing view. From the top level you can see all the vineyards spread out at your feet, a magical image that you will surely remember for a long time. After the ascent and descent we decided to stop for an aperitif at the foot of the castle overlooking the medieval walls.
